The trabeculae of the corpora cavernosa of the penis are fibrous structures that form the framework of the corpora cavernosa, which are two of the three erectile tissues found in the penis. These trabeculae are composed of smooth muscle and connective tissue, and they play a crucial role in the erectile function of the penis.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The trabeculae are arranged in a complex network within the corpora cavernosa. They are covered by a dense fibrous sheath known as the tunica albuginea. The spaces between the trabeculae are filled with blood during erection, allowing the penis to become rigid. The trabeculae themselves are made up of collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and smooth muscle cells, which provide both strength and flexibility to the erectile tissue.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the trabeculae is to support the erectile tissue and facilitate the process of erection. During sexual arousal, the smooth muscle within the trabeculae relaxes, allowing the blood vessels to dilate and fill the spaces between the trabeculae with blood. This engorgement of blood causes the penis to enlarge and become erect. The trabeculae also help maintain the shape and rigidity of the penis during erection.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Disorders affecting the trabeculae of the corpora cavernosa can lead to erectile dysfunction. Conditions such as Peyronie's disease, which involves the development of fibrous scar tissue within the penis, can alter the structure of the trabeculae and affect normal erectile function. Understanding the anatomy and function of the trabeculae is important in diagnosing and treating such conditions.
