Treehouse of Horror VIII
Treehouse of Horror VIII is the eighth Halloween-themed episode of the long-running animated television series The Simpsons. It first aired on the Fox Network on October 26, 1997. As with other Treehouse of Horror episodes, it features three separate segments, each with a different storyline and a variety of parodies of science fiction, horror, and fantasy films. The episode was directed by Mark Kirkland and written by Mike Scully, David X. Cohen, and Ned Goldreyer.
Segments[edit | edit source]
The HΩmega Man[edit | edit source]
The first segment, "The HΩmega Man", parodies the film The Omega Man. After Mayor Quimby makes a joke that offends the government of France, they retaliate by detonating a neutron bomb over Springfield, which only Homer survives due to being in a bomb shelter. He discovers that the rest of his family survived due to their house's advanced construction, and they must deal with the now-mutated citizens.
Fly vs. Fly[edit | edit source]
"Fly vs. Fly" is a spoof of the 1958 film The Fly. Using a teleportation device purchased from Professor Frink, Bart attempts to merge with a fly to gain its abilities. Instead, he becomes a grotesque hybrid of a boy and a fly, leading to a series of misadventures.
Easy-Bake Coven[edit | edit source]
The final segment, "Easy-Bake Coven", is set in the Salem witch trials era and parodies various witchcraft stories. Marge is accused of being a witch after she is discovered practicing witchcraft. The segment explores the origins of Halloween in Springfield, with Marge and her sisters flying on brooms and stealing children for candy, which becomes the tradition of trick-or-treating.
Reception[edit | edit source]
"Treehouse of Horror VIII" received positive reviews from critics and fans alike for its clever writing, inventive parodies, and the way it maintained the series' high standard for Halloween specials. It is often cited as one of the best Treehouse of Horror episodes.
