Triazofos
0Triazofos is an organophosphate pesticide that is used to control insects and mites in a variety of agricultural settings. It is a non-systemic insecticide and acaricide with contact and stomach action, and is used on a wide range of crops, including cotton, rice, fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and tea.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Triazofos is a phosphorothioate, which is a type of organophosphate. It has the chemical formula C12H16N3O3PS. The molecular weight of triazofos is 313.31 g/mol. It is a yellow to brown liquid with a mild odor.
Mode of Action[edit | edit source]
Triazofos works by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is essential for normal nerve impulse transmission. Inhibition of this enzyme leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine, causing continuous stimulation of the nerves, muscles, and glands. This results in the death of the insect or mite.
Toxicity[edit | edit source]
Triazofos is highly toxic to mammals, birds, fish, and bees. It is classified as a Category II pesticide by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indicating moderate acute toxicity. Chronic exposure to triazofos can cause a variety of health effects, including neurological damage, respiratory problems, and cancer.
Regulation[edit | edit source]
In the United States, triazofos is regulated by the EPA under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). It is classified as a restricted use pesticide, meaning it can only be used by certified applicators. In the European Union, the use of triazofos is banned under the Biocidal Products Regulation.
Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]
Triazofos is highly toxic to non-target organisms, including birds, fish, and beneficial insects. It is also persistent in the environment, with a half-life in soil of up to 60 days. This can lead to contamination of ground and surface water, posing a risk to aquatic life.
