Tricholoma saponaceum

Tricholoma saponaceum

Tricholoma saponaceum is a species of mushroom in the genus Tricholoma. It is commonly known as the soap-scented tricholoma due to its distinctive odor resembling soap. This mushroom is widely distributed in forests across North America and Europe.

Description[edit | edit source]

Tricholoma saponaceum has a convex cap that ranges in color from pale yellow to brownish-gray. The cap can reach up to 10 centimeters in diameter and is often sticky when moist. The gills are white and crowded together beneath the cap. The stem is cylindrical and can grow up to 10 centimeters tall.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

This species is typically found in mixed forests, especially under coniferous trees. It forms mycorrhizal associations with various tree species. Tricholoma saponaceum is commonly encountered in North America and Europe, particularly in temperate regions.

Edibility[edit | edit source]

While Tricholoma saponaceum is not considered toxic, it is not highly regarded for its culinary value. Some sources suggest that it may cause gastrointestinal upset in some individuals. As a result, it is not commonly sought after for consumption.

Similar Species[edit | edit source]

Tricholoma saponaceum can be confused with other species within the genus Tricholoma, such as Tricholoma sulphureum and Tricholoma scalpturatum. Care should be taken to properly identify these mushrooms before consumption.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The conservation status of Tricholoma saponaceum is not well-documented. However, like many fungi, its habitat may be threatened by deforestation and habitat loss.
