Troleandomycin

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Troleandomycin is a macrolide antibiotic that is used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria. Troleandomycin is also used in the treatment of asthma and other respiratory diseases due to its ability to inhibit the metabolism of certain corticosteroids.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Troleandomycin works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This prevents the bacteria from growing and reproducing, which eventually leads to their death.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all antibiotics, troleandomycin can cause side effects. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as hepatotoxicity and cholestatic jaundice.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Troleandomycin can interact with other medications, including certain antifungal drugs, anticoagulants, and corticosteroids. It can also interact with grapefruit juice, which can increase the levels of the drug in the body and potentially lead to an increased risk of side effects.
