Background

Following the success of their previous album, High Violet, The National began working on Trouble Will Find Me in late 2011. The band took a more relaxed approach to recording this album, which was reflected in the more spontaneous and less polished sound compared to their earlier work.

Recording

The recording sessions for Trouble Will Find Me took place in various locations, including Aaron Dessner's home studio in Brooklyn, New York. The band also recorded parts of the album in Berlin, Los Angeles, and Upstate New York.
