United States

The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It consists of 50 states, a federal district, five major unincorporated territories, and various possessions. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the most populous city is New York City.

The United States was founded on July 4, 1776, with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. The country was established as a result of the American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783.

Early History[edit | edit source]

The early history of the United States is marked by the arrival of European colonists in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Thirteen Colonies were established along the East Coast, and they eventually revolted against British rule.

Civil War and Reconstruction[edit | edit source]

The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a pivotal event in U.S. history, fought between the Union (northern states) and the Confederate States of America (southern states that seceded). The war ended with the defeat of the Confederacy and the abolition of slavery in the United States.

The United States is a federal republic and a representative democracy. The government is composed of three branches: the Executive, headed by the President; the Legislative, consisting of the Congress (the Senate and House of Representatives); and the Judicial, led by the Supreme Court.
