Ultiva

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ultiva is a brand name for the drug Remifentanil, a potent ultra short-acting synthetic opioid analgesic. It is given to patients during surgery to relieve pain and as an adjunct to an anaesthetic.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Remifentanil, the active ingredient in Ultiva, is a specific mu-opioid receptor agonist. It has a rapid onset and short duration of action. The drug is metabolized by non-specific blood and tissue esterases, and its metabolites are not active.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Ultiva is used in the operating room for its analgesic and sedative properties. It is often used in combination with other drugs for general anesthesia. The drug can also be used for sedation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like other opioids, Ultiva can cause a range of side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, itching, and respiratory depression. Due to its potency and rapid onset, it should be administered under the supervision of a trained healthcare professional.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Ultiva should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to Remifentanil or other fentanyl analogs. It should also be used with caution in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, as this can affect the drug's metabolism and excretion.
