United Nations Disengagement Observer Force
== United Nations Disengagement Observer Force ==
The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) is a United Nations peacekeeping force established by the United Nations Security Council in May 1974 to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Syria following the Yom Kippur War. The force was created by United Nations Security Council Resolution 350.
History[edit | edit source]
The establishment of UNDOF followed the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, which saw significant conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria. The ceasefire agreement, known as the Agreement on Disengagement, was signed on May 31, 1974, and UNDOF was deployed to supervise the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces and to maintain the ceasefire.
Mandate[edit | edit source]
UNDOF's mandate includes:
- Monitoring the ceasefire.
- Supervising the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces.
- Ensuring that no military forces are present in the areas of separation and limitation.
The mandate of UNDOF is renewed every six months by the United Nations Security Council.
Structure[edit | edit source]
UNDOF is composed of military personnel from various contributing countries. The force is headquartered in Camp Faouar, located in the Golan Heights. The force operates in the area of separation, a buffer zone that runs along the Israeli-Syrian ceasefire line.
Operations[edit | edit source]
UNDOF conducts regular inspections and patrols to ensure compliance with the ceasefire agreement. The force also liaises with both Israeli and Syrian military authorities to address any violations or incidents that may arise.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
UNDOF faces several challenges, including:
- The volatile security situation in the region, particularly due to the ongoing Syrian Civil War.
- Restrictions on movement and access imposed by the conflicting parties.
- The need for continuous support and cooperation from the international community.
Contributions[edit | edit source]
UNDOF has played a crucial role in maintaining stability in the Golan Heights region. Its presence has helped to prevent the escalation of hostilities and has provided a measure of security for the local population.
