United Nations Security Council Resolution 341
United Nations Security Council Resolution 341 was adopted on October 27, 1973, during the Yom Kippur War. The resolution was part of the efforts by the United Nations Security Council to address the conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.
Background[edit | edit source]
The Yom Kippur War, also known as the October War, began on October 6, 1973, when Egyptian and Syrian forces launched a coordinated attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. The conflict was part of the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict and followed the Six-Day War of 1967, during which Israel had captured the Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
Provisions of the Resolution[edit | edit source]
United Nations Security Council Resolution 341 called for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 338, which had been adopted on October 22, 1973. Resolution 338 had called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations aimed at achieving a just and durable peace in the Middle East.
Resolution 341 specifically addressed the establishment of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) to supervise the ceasefire and the disengagement of forces. The resolution authorized the deployment of UNEF to the conflict zone and outlined its mandate and operational guidelines.
Implementation[edit | edit source]
The establishment of UNEF was a significant step in the peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations. The force was tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, preventing the resumption of hostilities, and facilitating the withdrawal of military forces from the front lines. UNEF played a crucial role in stabilizing the situation and creating conditions conducive to further peace negotiations.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The adoption of Resolution 341 and the deployment of UNEF helped to de-escalate the immediate conflict and paved the way for subsequent peace efforts, including the Camp David Accords of 1978 and the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty of 1979. The resolution demonstrated the United Nations' commitment to peacekeeping and conflict resolution in the Middle East.
