United Nations Security Council Resolution 346 was adopted on April 8, 1974. The resolution addressed the situation in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) and its role in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Background[edit | edit source]

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN), charged with ensuring international peace and security, accepting new members to the United Nations, and approving any changes to the United Nations Charter. The UNSC has the authority to establish peacekeeping operations, enact international sanctions, and authorize military action through Security Council resolutions.

The United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) was established by the United Nations General Assembly to secure and supervise the cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, particularly following the Suez Crisis of 1956. The force was tasked with ensuring that the terms of the ceasefire were respected by all parties involved.

Provisions of the Resolution[edit | edit source]

United Nations Security Council Resolution 346 extended the mandate of the UNEF for an additional six months. The resolution recognized the importance of the UNEF in maintaining peace and stability in the region and called upon all parties to cooperate fully with the force.

The resolution also requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations to keep the Security Council informed on the progress and activities of the UNEF. The extension of the UNEF's mandate was seen as a crucial step in supporting ongoing peace efforts in the Middle East.

Voting[edit | edit source]

The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor, none against, and two abstentions from the People's Republic of China and the Iraqi Republic.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The extension of the UNEF's mandate under Resolution 346 played a significant role in stabilizing the region during a period of heightened tensions. The presence of the UNEF helped to prevent further escalation of conflicts and provided a buffer between opposing forces.
