United Nations Security Council Resolution 363 was adopted on 29 November 1974. The resolution addressed the situation in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Syria.

Background[edit | edit source]

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN), charged with ensuring international peace and security, accepting new members to the UN, and approving any changes to the UN Charter. The UNSC has the authority to establish peacekeeping operations, enact international sanctions, and authorize military action through Security Council resolutions.

Content of the Resolution[edit | edit source]

Resolution 363 was adopted in the context of the Yom Kippur War, which had taken place in October 1973. The resolution called for the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 350 to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

The key points of Resolution 363 include:

  • Reaffirmation of previous resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 338, which called for a ceasefire and the start of negotiations aimed at establishing a just and durable peace in the Middle East.
  • Extension of the mandate of UNDOF for an additional six months.
  • A request for the Secretary-General to report on the situation at the end of this period.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The adoption of Resolution 363 helped to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria and provided a framework for continued UN monitoring and peacekeeping efforts in the region. The presence of UNDOF has been a stabilizing factor in the Golan Heights, an area of strategic importance and frequent tension.
