Universal Robina[edit | edit source]

Universal Robina Corporation (URC) is one of the largest branded consumer food and beverage product companies in the Philippines and has a significant and growing presence in the ASEAN markets. URC is among the Philippines' pioneers in the industry. It has been in operations for over 50 years since John Gokongwei, Jr. established Universal Corn Products, Inc., a cornstarch manufacturing plant in Pasig, in 1954.

History[edit | edit source]

Universal Robina Corporation traces its beginnings all the way back to 1954. John Gokongwei, Jr. was doing very well then as a trader/importer. He had learned the trade when his father died before the war, and had worked hard through the war and postwar years to prosper. However, while he thrived, he took a long hard look at his company, and correctly predicted that trading would remain a low-margin business.

Business Units[edit | edit source]

URC operates in three business segments, which are branded consumer foods, agro-industrial products and commodity food products.

Branded Consumer Foods Group[edit | edit source]

The Branded Consumer Foods Group (BCFG) includes the production and distribution of a diverse mix of salty snacks, candies, biscuits, chocolates, and instant noodles in the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, China, and other countries.

Agro-Industrial Group[edit | edit source]

The Agro-Industrial Group's operations include hog and poultry farming, production and distribution of animal feeds, glucose and soya products, and production and distribution of veterinary compounds.

Commodity Foods Group[edit | edit source]

The Commodity Foods Group includes sugar milling and refining, flour milling and pasta manufacturing, and renewable energy development.

Corporate Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]

URC, through its operating units in the Philippines, has implemented various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs aimed at improving the lives of its stakeholders and contributing to the development of the communities where it operates.
