University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is a healthcare organization that operates the University Hospital Coventry and the Hospital of St. Cross in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. The trust works in partnership with the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School.

History[edit | edit source]

In 2014–15, the trust ended the year with a deficit of £16.9 million, significantly higher than the planned surplus of £1.8 million. During the same period, there were nine cases of MRSA in eight patients, exceeding the target of zero cases and the usual number of two or fewer cases in previous years.

Development[edit | edit source]

In July 2015, the trust was selected as one of five organizations to benefit from a five-year, £12.5 million program led by Jeremy Hunt to introduce the clinical engagement and culture tools of the Virginia Mason Medical Center from the United States. This program aimed to improve patient safety and outcomes.

In 2019, the trust announced that it would no longer utilize the services of Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes, opting instead for a commercial contract with QE Facilities Limited, a subsidiary of the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Research and Teaching[edit | edit source]

The University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust collaborates with the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School on various research themes and areas of clinical research. The trust also provides training and education for postgraduates.

Controversy[edit | edit source]

In 2010, Dr. Raj Mattu, a consultant cardiologist, was dismissed by the trust. In 2001, he had exposed cases of two patients who died in crowded bays at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry. In April 2014, an Employment Tribunal ruled that Dr. Mattu was unfairly dismissed and had faced detriments as a whistleblower.
