University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is a public university located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is an ancient university founded in 1495, making it the third oldest university in Scotland and the fifth oldest in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The University of Aberdeen is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world and is known for its history, academic excellence, and contributions to research.

History[edit | edit source]

The University of Aberdeen was formed by the merger of two pre-existing colleges: King's College, founded in 1495 by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor of Scotland, under a papal bull by Pope Alexander VI; and Marischal College, founded in 1593 by George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal. King's College was initially established to train doctors, teachers, and clergy for the communities of northern Scotland, and lawyers and administrators to serve the Scottish Crown. Marischal College, on the other hand, was founded as a Protestant alternative to the primarily Catholic King's College. The two colleges operated independently until their merger in 1860 to form the modern University of Aberdeen.

The iconic Marischal College building, one of the largest granite buildings in the world, now serves as the headquarters of Aberdeen City Council but remains emblematic of the university.
