The University of Bonn (German: Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ) is a public research university located in Bonn, Germany. Founded in 1818, it is one of Germany's most prestigious institutions of higher education and is known for its research and teaching excellence.

The University of Bonn was established on October 18, 1818, by Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. The university was founded as a response to the need for a new institution of higher learning in the Rhineland, following the loss of the University of Duisburg during the Napoleonic Wars. The university was named after its founder, Friedrich Wilhelm III, and the region it serves, the Rhineland.
