Public university system in California, United States
The University of California (UC) is a public university system in the U.S. state of California. The system is composed of ten campuses, a combined student body of over 280,000 students, 227,000 faculty and staff, and over 2.0 million living alumni. Its first campus, UC Berkeley, was founded in 1868, while the newest campus, UC Merced, opened in 2005. The University of California is governed by a 26-member Board of Regents.

The University of California was established in 1868, following the Morrill Act of 1862, which provided federal land to states to finance higher education. The first campus, UC Berkeley, was established in the city of Berkeley. The university expanded rapidly in the 20th century, adding campuses in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Davis, among others.

The University of California is governed by the Board of Regents, which consists of 26 members. The board appoints the President of the University of California, who is the chief executive officer of the system. The current president is Michael V. Drake.

The University of California offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. It is known for its research output and has numerous research centers and institutes across its campuses. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of leading research universities in the United States.

The University of California is a major center for research, with numerous research institutes and facilities. It operates several national laboratories, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
