University of Cape Town

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university located in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the oldest higher education institution in the country and is widely regarded as one of the leading universities in Africa. UCT was founded in 1829 as the South African College, a high school for boys. The college had a small tertiary-education facility that grew substantially after 1880 when the discovery of gold and diamonds in the north - and the resulting demand for skills in mining - gave it the financial boost it needed to grow. The University of Cape Town was formally established as a university in 1918 and has since developed into a fully fledged university with over 25,000 students.

The main campus is located on the slopes of Devil's Peak in the Cape Peninsula, making it one of the most picturesque university campuses in the world. The university also has several satellite campuses including the Health Sciences campus at Groote Schuur Hospital, where the first human heart transplant took place under the leadership of UCT alumnus Christiaan Barnard.
