The University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra in Portuguese) is a public university located in Coimbra, Portugal. Established in 1290 by King Dinis, it is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world, the oldest university of Portugal, and one of its largest higher education and research institutions.

The history of the University of Coimbra dates back to the 13th century. It was initially founded in Lisbon before moving to Coimbra in 1308. Over the centuries, it has played a crucial role in the academic and cultural development of Portugal. The university was officially confirmed in Coimbra in 1537 by King John III after several relocations between Lisbon and Coimbra.
