The University of Ljubljana (

) is the largest and oldest university in Slovenia. It is located in the capital city, Ljubljana. Founded in 1919, it has grown to become a central institution for higher education and research in the country.

The University of Ljubljana was established on 23 July 1919, following the end of World War I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The university was founded to provide higher education in the Slovenian language and to promote Slovenian culture and science. Initially, it comprised five faculties: Arts, Medicine, Law, Theology, and Technical Studies.
During the Second World War, the university faced significant challenges, including the occupation of Slovenia by Axis powers. Despite these difficulties, it continued to operate and expand its academic offerings.

The main building of the University of Ljubljana is located in the center of Ljubljana, in a historic building that was originally constructed for the Carniolan Provincial Government. The university's facilities are spread across the city, with various faculties and departments housed in different buildings.

The University of Ljubljana offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across its 23 faculties and 3 academies. It is known for its research output and has numerous research institutes and centers.
