Ljubljana is the capital city of Slovenia and its largest city. It is located in the central part of the country and serves as the cultural, educational, economic, political, and administrative center of Slovenia. The city is situated along the Ljubljanica River, which flows through the city center.

The area of Ljubljana has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest known settlements date back to the Bronze Age. The city was first mentioned in written sources in 1112. During the Roman Empire, a military encampment called Emona was established in the area.

In the Middle Ages, Ljubljana became an important trade and cultural center. It was granted town privileges in 1220. The city experienced significant growth and development during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Ljubljana is located in the Ljubljana Basin, surrounded by the Julian Alps to the northwest and the Dinaric Alps to the south. The city covers an area of 163.8 square kilometers and has an elevation of 295 meters above sea level.
