University of Nigeria
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is a public university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Founded in 1955 by Nnamdi Azikiwe, it officially opened on 7 October 1960. The University of Nigeria was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modeled upon the American educational system. It is one of the five elite universities in Nigeria and is known for its academic excellence.

The University of Nigeria was established to provide a higher education institution that would serve a newly independent Nigeria. The idea was conceived by Nnamdi Azikiwe, who became the first President of Nigeria, and was aimed at fostering Nigerian nationalism and providing a workforce for the newly independent nation. The university was officially opened by the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1960.
Campuses[edit | edit source]
The university has four campuses - Nsukka, Enugu, Ituku-Ozalla, and UNEC. The main campus in Nsukka is known for its scenic landscape and architectural landmarks. The Enugu Campus (UNEC) is home to the College of Medicine and faculties such as Business Administration and Environmental Studies. Ituku-Ozalla hosts the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), which is a major center for medical training and research.

UNN boasts a wide range of faculties including, but not limited to, Agriculture, Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. Each faculty is subdivided into departments offering various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The College of Medicine, located primarily on the Enugu campus, is one of the most prestigious medical schools in Nigeria. It offers programs in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Nursing Sciences, and Medical Laboratory Sciences among others. The college is known for its rigorous curriculum, extensive clinical training, and research, preparing students for a career in the medical field.
