History[edit | edit source]

Founding and Early Years[edit | edit source]

The University of Santo Tomas was established by the third Archbishop of Manila, Miguel de Benavides, O.P., who donated his personal library and a modest amount of money to form a seminary-college. The institution was originally intended to prepare young men for the priesthood. It was officially founded on April 28, 1611, and was initially named the "Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario."

Royal and Pontifical University[edit | edit source]

In 1645, the college was elevated to a university by Pope Innocent X, and in 1680, it was granted the title "Royal" by King Charles II of Spain. The university was later declared a "Pontifical University" by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, further solidifying its status as a leading institution of higher learning.
