Urocystis is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Urocystidaceae. This genus is primarily known for causing smut diseases in plants, particularly affecting members of the Poaceae (grass) family, although it can also affect other plant families. The diseases caused by Urocystis species are characterized by the formation of galls or tumors on the host plants, which eventually burst open to release the spores of the fungus. These spores are typically dark in color, giving the affected plant parts a sooty or smutted appearance, hence the name "smut" for the disease.

Urocystis species produce teliospores that are thick-walled, typically dark, and are contained within sori that are covered by the host tissue until maturity. When mature, the sori rupture the host tissue to release the spores. The life cycle of Urocystis includes both asexual and sexual reproduction phases, with the teliospores functioning as the durable, overwintering stage in the life cycle. The spores germinate to produce basidia, on which basidiospores are formed and then infect new host plants.

Urocystis species are obligate parasites, meaning they require a living host to complete their life cycle. They are found worldwide and infect a wide range of host plants. The distribution and prevalence of Urocystis infections in plant populations can be influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and the presence of susceptible host species. The management of Urocystis-caused diseases involves cultural practices such as crop rotation, the use of resistant plant varieties, and the timely removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce the source of spores for future infections.
