Urology (journal)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Urology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. The organs under the domain of urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis).

History[edit | edit source]

The field of urology has been recognized as a specialty since the second century AD. The earliest known urologist was a Roman named Galen, who performed the first bladder stone removal. Galen's work laid the foundation for the field of urology, and his techniques and theories were used for centuries.

Sub-disciplines[edit | edit source]

Urology is a field with numerous sub-disciplines, including:

  • Endourology: This is the branch of urology that deals with the closed manipulation of the urinary tract. It has lately grown up to the most common method for stone disease due to the development of various endoscopes and intracorporeal lithotripters.
  • Urologic oncology: This discipline concerns the surgical treatment of malignant genitourinary diseases such as cancer of the prostate, adrenal glands, bladder, kidneys, ureters, testicles, and penis.
  • Neurourology: This branch focuses on the nerves and muscles that regulate the urinary system. Conditions such as voiding disorders, urodynamic evaluation of patients and erectile dysfunction are diagnosed and treated in this sub-discipline.
  • Pediatric urology: This sub-discipline focuses on the disorders of children's genitourinary systems. Pediatric urologists provide care for both boys and girls ranging from birth to early adult age.
