Uzodinma Iweala
Uzodinma Iweala is a Nigerian-American author, physician, and filmmaker. He is best known for his debut novel, Beasts of No Nation, which has been adapted into a critically acclaimed film. Iweala's work often explores themes of war, identity, and the African experience.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Uzodinma Iweala was born in Washington, D.C., to Nigerian parents. He is the son of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a renowned economist and former Finance Minister of Nigeria. Iweala attended St. Albans School and later went on to study at Harvard University, where he graduated with an A.B. in English and American Literature and Language. He also earned a medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Writing[edit | edit source]
Iweala's debut novel, Beasts of No Nation, was published in 2005. The book tells the story of a young boy who becomes a child soldier in an unnamed African country. The novel received widespread acclaim for its powerful narrative and was later adapted into a film directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba.
In addition to Beasts of No Nation, Iweala has written several essays and short stories that have appeared in various publications. His second novel, Speak No Evil, was published in 2018 and explores the complexities of identity and sexuality through the story of a Nigerian-American teenager.

Iweala is also a trained physician. After completing his medical degree at Columbia University, he has been involved in various healthcare initiatives, particularly those focused on improving healthcare access in Africa.
