VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor is a type of drug that inhibits the tyrosine kinase activity of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR). These inhibitors are used in the treatment of various cancers, including renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Mechanism of action[edit | edit source]

VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors work by blocking the tyrosine kinase activity of the VEGFR. This prevents the receptor from activating, which in turn inhibits the growth of blood vessels (angiogenesis) that tumors need to grow and spread.

Uses[edit | edit source]

VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors are used in the treatment of various types of cancer. They are particularly effective in treating cancers that are highly vascular, such as renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Like all drugs, VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors can cause side effects. These can include hypertension, proteinuria, and hand-foot syndrome. In rare cases, they can also cause more serious side effects such as heart failure and liver damage.

Examples[edit | edit source]

There are several different VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors available. These include sorafenib, sunitinib, and pazopanib.
