Varidnaviria
Varidnaviria is a realm of viruses. It was established in 2019 and includes two kingdoms: Monodnaviria and Duplodnaviria. The realm is named after Varidna, a goddess in Lithuanian mythology who is associated with viruses and disease.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The realm Varidnaviria includes the following kingdoms and phyla:
- Kingdom: Monodnaviria
- Phylum: Loebvirae
- Phylum: Ribozyvirae
- Kingdom: Duplodnaviria
- Phylum: Papovaviricetes
- Phylum: Preplasmiviricetes
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Viruses in the realm Varidnaviria are characterized by their DNA genomes. They can be either single-stranded (in the kingdom Monodnaviria) or double-stranded (in the kingdom Duplodnaviria). The viruses in this realm infect a wide range of hosts, including bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes.
Evolution[edit | edit source]
The realm Varidnaviria is thought to have evolved from a common ancestor that had a DNA genome. This ancestor is believed to have existed before the divergence of the three domains of life (bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes).
