Varna is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Situated strategically in the Gulf of Varna, the city has been a major economic, social, and cultural center for almost three millennia. Varna is often referred to as the maritime capital of Bulgaria and is a major tourist destination, a business and university center, seaport, and headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine.

History[edit | edit source]

Varna's history dates back to the 6th century BC when the first settlements were established by the Thracians. The city was known as Odessos in ancient times, which was a significant trading post for both the Greeks and the Romans. Varna became a vital military and economic center during the Byzantine Empire and later in the Bulgarian Empire after the fall of Byzantium.

In the medieval period, Varna faced numerous invasions by various tribes and was a battleground for control between the Byzantines and the Bulgarians. The city saw a significant development during the Renaissance period when it became a key port and trade center in the Ottoman Empire.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Varna is located on the northern coast of the Black Sea in the Varna Bay, and it lies at the mouth of the Varna Lake. The city's location on the easternmost areas of the European continent makes it a crossroad between Western Europe and the Middle East.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Varna is based largely on tourism, shipping, and industry. The city's port is the largest seaport in Bulgaria, and Varna is also one of the biggest industrial centers. It has a dynamic economy with growing tourism, services, and construction sectors.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Varna is a cultural hub with numerous museums, theaters, and galleries. The Varna Archaeological Museum houses some of the most famous artefacts in Bulgaria, including the oldest gold treasure in the world. The city is also home to the Varna Opera House, the Festival and Congress Centre, and hosts the Varna Summer International Music Festival.

Education[edit | edit source]

Varna is an important center for education, with several high schools, private and public universities, including the University of Economics – Varna and Medical University – Varna.
