Vasyl Ovsienko (born April 9, 1949) is a prominent Ukrainian human rights activist, dissident, and former political prisoner. He is known for his extensive work in documenting the history of the Soviet repressions and the Ukrainian dissident movement.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Vasyl Ovsienko was born in the village of Stavky, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in Philology.

Dissident Activities[edit | edit source]

Ovsienko became involved in the Ukrainian Helsinki Group in the late 1970s, an organization that monitored the Soviet Union's compliance with the Helsinki Accords. His activities led to his arrest and imprisonment by Soviet authorities. He was sentenced to several years in labor camps and internal exile.
