Vernacular
Vernacular refers to the language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region. It is the native language of a specific population, especially as distinguished from a literary, national or standard variety of the language.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of vernacular language has a long history, dating back to the Roman Empire. The term "vernacular" is derived from the Latin word "vernaculus," meaning "domestic, native, indigenous." In the Middle Ages, the vernacular languages of Europe began to be written down and used in literature, marking a significant shift in the use and perception of these languages.
Vernacular in Different Fields[edit | edit source]
Linguistics[edit | edit source]
In linguistics, the vernacular is contrasted with higher-prestige forms of language, such as national, literary, liturgical or scientific idiolects. Vernacular languages are typically the ones used in everyday speech by the population, and they often vary significantly from the standard language in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
In architecture, "vernacular" refers to a type of architecture which is indigenous to a specific time or place. It is built from local materials to meet the needs of the local people. The term is often contrasted with elite or polite architecture, which is characterized by stylistic elements of design intentionally incorporated for aesthetic purposes which go beyond a building's functional requirements.
Education[edit | edit source]
In education, vernacular education refers to education conducted in the native language of the students. This approach has been advocated as a means of improving educational outcomes, particularly in regions where the official language of instruction is different from the language spoken at home.
