Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor (1937–2016) was an American culinary anthropologist, author, and broadcaster. She was best known for her work in the field of food history and culture, particularly in relation to the African diaspora.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor was born on April 4, 1937, in Hampton County, South Carolina. She grew up in a Gullah-speaking family and was deeply influenced by the rich culinary traditions of her community.
Career[edit | edit source]
Smart-Grosvenor began her career as a part of the Black Arts Movement in the 1960s. She was a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, an avant-garde jazz ensemble, and contributed to various literary and theatrical productions.
In the 1970s, Smart-Grosvenor turned her attention to food. She published her first cookbook, Vibration Cooking: or, The Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl, in 1970. The book was not just a collection of recipes but also a cultural commentary on the African diaspora and its culinary traditions.
Smart-Grosvenor's work in food history and culture extended to broadcasting. She was a regular contributor to National Public Radio's All Things Considered and The Splendid Table. She also hosted her own show, Seasonings, on the Public Broadcasting Service.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Smart-Grosvenor continued to write and broadcast about food until her death on September 3, 2016. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the James Beard Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Smart-Grosvenor's contributions to the understanding of African diaspora food culture continue to be celebrated. Her work has influenced a new generation of culinary historians and chefs, and her books remain in print.
