Viktor Ivanovich Patsayev (June 19, 1933 – June 30, 1971) was a Soviet cosmonaut and engineer who flew on the Soyuz 11 mission. He was born in Aktyubinsk, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Patsayev was born on June 19, 1933, in Aktyubinsk, Kazakh SSR. He studied engineering and graduated with a degree in engineering.

Career[edit | edit source]

Patsayev was selected as a cosmonaut in the 1968 Soviet Group. He made his only spaceflight aboard Soyuz 11 in 1971. The mission was intended to dock with the Salyut 1 space station, but tragically, the crew perished during re-entry due to a cabin depressurization.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Viktor Patsayev, along with his crewmates Georgi Dobrovolski and Vladislav Volkov, are remembered for their contributions to space exploration. Their sacrifice led to improvements in spacecraft design and safety protocols.

Death[edit | edit source]

On June 30, 1971, Patsayev, along with Dobrovolski and Volkov, died during re-entry when a cabin depressurization occurred on Soyuz 11. The crew was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
