Wintershouse StGeorges 15

Virga Jesse is a motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1885. The piece is written for an unaccompanied mixed choir and is one of Bruckner's most celebrated sacred choral works. The text of the motet is taken from the Roman Catholic liturgy, specifically from the Offertory of the Feast of the Annunciation.

Composition and Structure[edit | edit source]

The motet is set in the key of E minor and is composed for an SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) choir. It is characterized by its rich harmonic language and intricate polyphony, which are hallmarks of Bruckner's choral writing. The piece is relatively short, typically lasting around four minutes in performance.

Text[edit | edit source]

The text of Virga Jesse is a Latin hymn that praises the Virgin Mary. The opening lines translate to "The rod of Jesse has blossomed: a Virgin has brought forth God and man: God has restored peace, reconciling in Himself the lowest with the highest."

Musical Analysis[edit | edit source]

Virga Jesse is noted for its expressive use of dynamics and its seamless blend of homophonic and polyphonic textures. The motet opens with a serene and contemplative mood, gradually building to a powerful climax before returning to a peaceful conclusion. Bruckner's use of suspensions and resolutions creates a sense of tension and release that enhances the emotional impact of the text.

Performance History[edit | edit source]

Since its composition, Virga Jesse has been a staple of the choral repertoire and is frequently performed by choirs around the world. It is often included in programs of sacred music and is particularly popular during the Advent and Christmas seasons.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Virga Jesse is considered one of Bruckner's finest motets and is highly regarded for its spiritual depth and technical mastery. It exemplifies Bruckner's ability to combine traditional liturgical forms with his own unique harmonic language.
