Vittorio Luigi Alfieri

Vittorio Luigi Alfieri (1749-1803) was an Italian dramatist and poet, considered one of the most important figures in Italian literature. He is known for his tragedies, which were influential in the development of Italian theater.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Alfieri was born in Asti, Italy, in 1749. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his paternal grandfather. He received a classical education and studied law in Turin.

Literary Career[edit | edit source]

Alfieri began writing poetry and plays in his early twenties. His first major work was the tragedy Cleopatra, which was well-received and established his reputation as a playwright. He went on to write numerous tragedies, including Saul and Agamemnon, which are considered among his finest works.

Political Views[edit | edit source]

Alfieri was a strong advocate for Italian independence and opposed foreign domination of Italy. His works often reflected his political beliefs, and he was seen as a patriot by many of his contemporaries.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Alfieri's works had a significant impact on Italian literature and theater. He is credited with helping to establish a national Italian identity through his writing. His plays continue to be performed and studied today.
