Vivian Howard is a renowned American chef, television host, and author. She is best known for her work on the PBS television series, A Chef's Life, which documents her life and culinary journey in Eastern North Carolina.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Vivian Howard was born and raised in Deep Run, North Carolina. She attended North Carolina State University, where she earned a degree in English. After graduation, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in advertising but soon discovered her passion for cooking.

A Chef's Life[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Howard began hosting the television series A Chef's Life on PBS. The show, which ran for five seasons, followed Howard as she explored the rich agricultural heritage of Eastern North Carolina and its influence on Southern cuisine. The series won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Culinary Program in 2014.

Chef and Restaurateur[edit | edit source]

Howard and her husband, Ben Knight, own and operate two restaurants in Kinston, North Carolina: Chef & the Farmer and Boiler Room Oyster Bar. Chef & the Farmer, which opened in 2006, focuses on farm-to-table cuisine using local ingredients. Boiler Room Oyster Bar, which opened in 2013, offers a more casual dining experience with a focus on oysters and burgers.

In addition to her work as a chef and television host, Howard is also a successful author. Her first cookbook, Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South, was published in 2016 and won the James Beard Foundation Award for American Cooking.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Howard lives in Kinston, North Carolina, with her husband, Ben Knight, and their two children. She is actively involved in her community and is a strong advocate for local farmers and sustainable agriculture.
