Voiding Cystourethrogram

A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) is a medical imaging procedure used to visualize the urinary system. It is particularly useful in diagnosing conditions such as vesicoureteral reflux, urinary tract infections, and other abnormalities of the bladder and urethra.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The VCUG procedure involves the insertion of a catheter into the urethra to fill the bladder with a contrast material. This is followed by X-ray imaging to visualize the urinary system. The patient is then asked to void while additional X-ray images are taken to assess the flow of urine and detect any abnormalities.

Indications[edit | edit source]

VCUG is often indicated in patients with recurrent urinary tract infections, unexplained hematuria, or suspected abnormalities of the urinary system. It is also used in follow-up evaluations after surgery for vesicoureteral reflux or other urinary system abnormalities.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

While VCUG is generally safe, it does carry some risks. These include the risk of urinary tract infection, allergic reaction to the contrast material, and radiation exposure. However, these risks are typically outweighed by the benefits of accurately diagnosing and treating urinary system abnormalities.
