Vyvyane Loh
Vyvyane Loh is a Malaysian-born American physician and author. She is best known for her novel, Breaking the Tongue, which provides a detailed account of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore during World War II.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Loh was born in Penang, Malaysia, and moved to the United States at the age of 13. She attended Harvard University, where she studied Biology and English Literature. After completing her undergraduate studies, she pursued a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing her medical degree, Loh practiced medicine for several years before deciding to pursue a career in writing. Her first novel, Breaking the Tongue, was published in 2004. The novel is a historical fiction set during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore in World War II. It received critical acclaim for its vivid portrayal of the period and its complex characters.
In addition to her work as a novelist, Loh has also written several short stories and essays that have been published in various literary journals and anthologies. Her work often explores themes of identity, culture, and the immigrant experience.

Loh's work has been recognized with several awards and nominations. She was a recipient of the James Jones First Novel Fellowship for Breaking the Tongue. Her short stories and essays have also received numerous accolades.
