Watson is a television series that aired on BBC One from 1981 to 1983. The series was created by John Hawkesworth, who is best known for his work on the popular series Upstairs, Downstairs.

The series follows the adventures of Dr. John Watson, a character originally created by Arthur Conan Doyle in his Sherlock Holmes stories. Unlike other adaptations, this series focuses on Watson's life and career outside of his partnership with Holmes. The show delves into Watson's personal life, his medical practice, and his experiences as a former British Army doctor.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Watson received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The series was particularly noted for its unique focus on Watson as a standalone character, rather than merely a sidekick to Holmes. Edward Hardwicke's portrayal of Watson was widely acclaimed, and the show has since gained a cult following among fans of Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although Watson only ran for two seasons, it left a lasting impact on the genre of detective television series. It paved the way for future adaptations that explore the lives of secondary characters in greater depth.
