Weil is a surname of German origin. It is shared by several notable people, including mathematicians, philosophers, and writers. The name is derived from the Middle High German "wīl," meaning "well" or "spring."

Notable people with the surname Weil[edit | edit source]

  • André Weil (1906–1998), a French mathematician known for his foundational work in number theory and algebraic geometry. He was a founding member of the influential group of mathematicians known as Nicolas Bourbaki.
  • Simone Weil (1909–1943), a French philosopher, Christian mystic, and political activist. Her works, such as Gravity and Grace and The Need for Roots, have had a significant influence on both philosophy and theology.
  • Andrew Weil (born 1942), an American physician, author, and spokesperson for holistic health and integrative medicine. He is the founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.

Other uses[edit | edit source]

  • Weil's disease, a severe form of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted by the urine of infected animals. It is named after the German physician Adolf Weil who first described the disease in 1886.
