White Coats for Black Lives rally in Columbus, Ohio, in 2020.

White Coats for Black Lives (WC4BL) is a medical student-run organization that aims to eliminate racial bias in the practice of medicine and recognize racism as a threat to the health and well-being of people of color. Formed in the wake of the Ferguson protests in 2014, the movement has grown to include healthcare professionals across the United States who are committed to addressing the impact of racism and inequality on health care.

History[edit | edit source]

The inception of White Coats for Black Lives can be traced back to December 10, 2014, when medical students across the United States organized a national white coat die-in to protest the lack of indictments in the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City. These protests marked a significant moment in the intersection of health care and social justice, highlighting the role that future healthcare professionals could play in addressing systemic racism.

Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]

The primary mission of WC4BL is to dismantle racism in medicine and promote the health, well-being, and self-determination of people of color. The organization has outlined several goals to support this mission, including:

  • Educating healthcare workers and students on the effects of racism on health outcomes.
  • Advocating for policies and practices that aim to reduce health disparities and promote equity in healthcare.
  • Supporting community health initiatives that aim to improve access to care and health outcomes for marginalized populations.

Activities[edit | edit source]

White Coats for Black Lives engages in a variety of activities to promote its mission, including:

  • Organizing die-ins, protests, and educational events to raise awareness about racism in healthcare.
  • Developing resources and curricula for medical schools to incorporate teachings on racism and its impact on health.
  • Partnering with other organizations to advocate for policy changes at local, state, and national levels.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its formation, WC4BL has had a significant impact on the conversation around racism in healthcare. The organization has been instrumental in pushing medical schools to reevaluate their curricula, encouraging them to include more content on social determinants of health, health disparities, and the history of racism in medicine. Additionally, WC4BL's advocacy has contributed to increased awareness and dialogue within the healthcare community about the importance of addressing racial bias and promoting health equity.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its successes, White Coats for Black Lives faces ongoing challenges, including resistance to change within the medical establishment and the broader societal challenge of addressing systemic racism. The organization continues to work towards its goals amidst these challenges, emphasizing the importance of sustained advocacy and education.
