William Pickles Hartley was a British businessman and philanthropist, best known as the founder of the Hartley's jam company. Born in 1846 in Colne, Lancashire, Hartley started his business in 1871 and it quickly grew to become one of the most successful jam manufacturers in the world.

Hartley was born in Colne, Lancashire, England, on 23 February 1846. His father was a successful grocer and Hartley followed in his footsteps, opening his own grocery store in 1868.

In 1871, Hartley started a jam manufacturing business in his hometown of Colne. The business, Hartley's, quickly grew in popularity due to the high quality of its products. Hartley's jam was made using only the finest fruits and was known for its rich, sweet taste.
