William R. Frist
William R. Frist (born February 22, 1952) is an American physician, businessman, and politician who served as a United States Senator from Tennessee from 1995 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party, Frist was the Senate Majority Leader from 2003 to 2007. He is also a heart and lung transplant surgeon.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
William R. Frist was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Princeton University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He then attended Harvard Medical School, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1978.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Frist completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He became a renowned heart and lung transplant surgeon and was a faculty member at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Frist entered politics in 1994, running for the United States Senate from Tennessee. He won the election and was re-elected in 2000. In 2002, he was elected Senate Majority Leader, a position he held until his retirement in 2007. During his tenure, he was known for his work on health care issues and his support for President George W. Bush's policies.
Post-Senate Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the Senate, Frist returned to his medical roots and became involved in various health care initiatives. He has served on the boards of several health-related organizations and has been a vocal advocate for global health issues.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Frist is married to Karyn McLaughlin and they have three sons. He is also an author, having written several books on health care and politics.
