Wimpy (restaurant)[edit | edit source]

Wimpy is a multinational chain of fast food restaurants that was originally based in Chicago. The company was established in 1934 by Edward Gold, who named the business after the character J. Wellington Wimpy from the popular comic strip Popeye.

History[edit | edit source]

The first Wimpy restaurant was opened in Bloomington, Indiana in 1934. The brand quickly gained popularity and expanded across the United States. In 1954, Wimpy was introduced to the UK by Lyons & Co., who obtained the rights to use the brand name in the United Kingdom. The first UK Wimpy restaurant was opened on Coventry Street in London.

Menu[edit | edit source]

Wimpy's menu primarily consists of hamburgers, fish and chips, breakfast items, and soft drinks. The restaurant is particularly known for its 'Bender in a Bun', a unique dish that features a sausage bent into a circular shape and served in a bun.

Expansion and Current Status[edit | edit source]

In the 1970s, Wimpy began expanding internationally, opening restaurants in countries such as South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Today, Wimpy operates in over 20 countries worldwide, with a strong presence in South Africa where it operates over 500 restaurants.
