Woodford Academy is a heritage-listed former schoolhouse, inn, and residence located in Woodford, New South Wales, Australia. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the Blue Mountains and has a rich history that reflects the development of the region.

History[edit | edit source]

The Woodford Academy was originally built in the 1830s as an inn known as the "Woodman Inn." It served as a popular stopover for travelers journeying between Sydney and the Bathurst goldfields. In 1868, the building was purchased by Alfred Fairfax, who converted it into a private residence.

In 1907, the property was acquired by John McManamey, who established the Woodford Academy, a private boys' school. The academy operated until 1936, after which the building was used for various purposes, including a guesthouse and a private residence.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The Woodford Academy is an example of early colonial architecture, featuring sandstone construction and a symmetrical facade. The building has undergone several modifications and extensions over the years, but it retains many of its original features, including the stone walls, fireplaces, and timber floors.

Current Use[edit | edit source]

Today, the Woodford Academy is managed by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and operates as a museum. It offers visitors a glimpse into the history of the Blue Mountains and the lives of the people who lived and worked in the region. The museum hosts regular events, exhibitions, and educational programs.

Significance[edit | edit source]

The Woodford Academy is significant for its historical, architectural, and social values. It is a rare example of an early colonial inn and schoolhouse and provides insight into the development of the Blue Mountains region. The building is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and is protected under heritage conservation laws.
