Woodhaven, Queens
Woodhaven, Queens is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered by Cypress Hills to the west, the Atlantic Avenue to the north, Forest Park to the east, and Ozone Park to the south.
Woodhaven, once known as Woodville, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The area was first settled by Europeans in the mid-1700s, and by the early 19th century, it had become a significant site for shipbuilding due to its proximity to Jamaica Bay.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Woodhaven became a popular residential area for the growing middle class in New York City. The neighborhood is known for its diverse population, with a mix of various ethnic and cultural groups, including a large Hispanic population, as well as significant numbers of African Americans, Asian Americans, and whites.
Woodhaven is home to several notable landmarks, including the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station, one of the busiest in Queens, and the historic St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. The neighborhood is also known for its vibrant commercial district along Jamaica Avenue, which features a variety of shops, restaurants, and other businesses.
Education in Woodhaven is provided by the New York City Department of Education, which operates several public schools in the neighborhood. There are also a number of private and parochial schools, as well as libraries operated by the Queens Public Library.
