Xi Jinping (born 15 June 1953) is a Chinese politician who has served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) since 2012, the President of the People's Republic of China since 2013, and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission since 2012. Often described as China's "paramount leader," Xi is the most prominent political figure in China and has consolidated significant power during his tenure.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Xi Jinping was born in Beijing, China, as the second son of Xi Zhongxun, a veteran revolutionary and former Vice Premier. During the Cultural Revolution, Xi's father was purged, and Xi himself was sent to work in the countryside as part of the "Down to the Countryside Movement." He spent several years in Shaanxi Province, where he worked as a manual laborer and lived in a cave dwelling.

Xi later attended Tsinghua University, where he studied chemical engineering. He also holds a doctorate in law from the same university, which he obtained through part-time studies.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Xi Jinping's political career began in earnest in the 1980s. He held various positions in the CPC, including serving as the party secretary of several provinces. His rise through the ranks was marked by a reputation for being pragmatic and effective.

In 2007, Xi was appointed to the Politburo Standing Committee, the top decision-making body in China. In 2012, he was elected as the General Secretary of the CPC, succeeding Hu Jintao.

Leadership and Policies[edit | edit source]

Xi Jinping's leadership has been characterized by a strong emphasis on consolidating power and reinforcing the role of the Communist Party in all aspects of Chinese life. He has launched several high-profile campaigns, including an anti-corruption drive that has targeted both high-ranking officials and lower-level bureaucrats.

Xi has also promoted the "Chinese Dream," a vision of national rejuvenation and prosperity. His foreign policy initiatives include the Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at expanding China's influence through infrastructure projects across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Xi Jinping is married to Peng Liyuan, a famous Chinese folk singer and performing artist. The couple has one daughter, Xi Mingze, who studied at Harvard University under a pseudonym.
