Y RNA is a class of small RNA molecules that are components of the cell's nucleus and cytoplasm. Initially discovered in the 1980s during studies on autoimmune diseases, particularly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, Y RNAs were found as part of the ribonucleoprotein complexes recognized by autoantibodies. These RNAs are named 'Y' due to their characteristic Y-shaped structure, which is crucial for their function and stability. Y RNAs are conserved across a wide range of species, indicating their essential roles in cellular processes.

Y RNAs are involved in various cellular functions, although their precise roles are still under investigation. They are known to play critical roles in DNA replication, particularly in the initiation phase.
