Yountville AVA

The Yountville AVA is an American Viticultural Area located within Napa Valley AVA in the town of Yountville, California. This region is recognized for its distinctive terroir and its production of high-quality wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

History[edit | edit source]

The Yountville AVA was established in 1999, making it one of the younger appellations within the Napa Valley. The region is named after George Calvert Yount, a pioneer and the first person to plant a vineyard in the Napa Valley.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Yountville AVA is located in the southern part of the Napa Valley, stretching from the Mayacamas Mountains in the west to the Vaca Range in the east. The region's climate is classified as Mediterranean, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The region's unique microclimate, influenced by its proximity to the San Pablo Bay, results in a longer growing season, allowing grapes to develop complex flavors and aromas.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

The Yountville AVA is known for its diverse soils, which include gravel, clay, and loam. These soil types, combined with the region's climate, contribute to the production of high-quality grapes. The region is particularly known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, although it also produces other varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

There are numerous wineries located within the Yountville AVA, many of which offer tastings and tours. Some of the most notable wineries include Domaine Chandon, Goosecross Cellars, and Bell Wine Cellars.
