Yuriy Shcherbak
Yuriy Shcherbak (born October 12, 1934) is a Ukrainian writer, politician, diplomat, and public figure. He has made significant contributions to Ukrainian literature, environmental activism, and international diplomacy.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Yuriy Shcherbak was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He graduated from the Kyiv Medical Institute in 1958, where he specialized in epidemiology. Shcherbak worked as a doctor and epidemiologist before turning to writing and politics.
Literary Career[edit | edit source]
Shcherbak began his literary career in the 1960s. He is known for his novels, short stories, and plays that often explore themes of social justice, environmental issues, and human rights. Some of his notable works include:

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Shcherbak became actively involved in politics. He was a member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, and served as the Minister of Environmental Protection from 1991 to 1992. Shcherbak was also appointed as Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Israel.

As a diplomat, Shcherbak worked to strengthen Ukraine's international relations. His tenure as Ambassador to the United States (1994-1998) was marked by efforts to secure economic and political support for Ukraine during its transition to independence.
